Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Essay Example
Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Essay Antoinette ââ¬Å"Toniâ⬠Harris January 31, 2011 Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Dictionary. com defines ethics as the body of moral principles or values governing or distinctive of a particular cultureà or group. The group in the definition could be an organization or business. The word moral is defined as pertaining to, or concerned with theà principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong. (Dictionary. com, 2011) An employee of a corporation oftentimes is faced with making a decision that causes them to examine their ethical or moral judgment in executing their decisions. In this paper, we examine the differences between ethical and moral issues and the differences between personal and business ethics. We also provide real world examples of common ethical problems in business. The difference between ethical and moral issues is as simple as the difference between right and wrong. The major difference between ethics and moral issue is the authority that governs the decision. Business ethical guidelines are set by the management of the business. Moral guidelines are self-imposed and learned behaviors from parents, associates and religious background.A business owner and the governmental entity where that business resides have the right to determine the business ethics of the corporation. However, the moral issues are decisions that are made by the individual employee based on his or her personal experience. For example, a manager of a restaurant may be faced with an ethical and moral dilemma when a person who is hungry with no money requests a free meal. As a company employee, it would be unethical for him or her to give away free food. However, as a fellow human being who has sympathy for mankind, his moral being may want to give the person a free meal.Personal and business ethics are two different areas. Trevino and Nelson (2007), defines ethics asââ¬âthe principles, norms, and standards of conduct governing an individual or groupââ¬âfocuses on conduct. While both deal with right and wrong, a personââ¬â¢s personal ethics deals with what he or she personally believes to be right or wrong. A personââ¬â¢s business ethics are dictated by a corporationââ¬â¢s management. While the individual may believe it is right to do something, the companyââ¬â¢s ethics policy may prevent him or her from acting on their personal ethics. For instance, a financial advisor has to have a client sign and initial several forms. After returning to the office and reviewing the forms, the financial advisor notices that the client inadvertently missed a spot where they should have initialed. It would be a business ethics violation for the financial advisor to initial the form on behalf of the client. For the financial advisor, it may not be against his personal ethics to initial the form, because the client more than likely would have initialed the form. However, as an agent of the business, the financi al advisor must follow the guidelines of the businessââ¬â¢ ethical policy.Although there is a thin line between ethics and morality, the difference is between business and personal. Personally, an individual has a right to decide for themselves what is right and wrong. However, as an employee of a company, when there is a dilemma between personal and business ethics then the ethical guidelines of the corporation should prevail. If an individual feels strongly against a companyââ¬â¢s business ethics, then he or she will have to determine if they want to continue to work for that organization because it is unlikely that management will change the ethics of the business.Someone who has strong personal ethical and moral values would probably be better off starting their own business and creating their own business ethics policies.

Popular Music Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Free Essays
Popular Music Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Free Essays Popular Music Popular music is: "music that is enjoyed by the largest possible audience." It includes country music, folk music, rhythm and blues ( R musical comedy, jazz, marches, rock n' roll, and ragtime. Popular music is primarily listened to by young people. In his book, Sound Effects, Simon Frith said that popular music has been about growing up, and that it has been like this since the beginning of the century.1 However, the popular music industry is based largely on the sale of records. However, popular music can also do many great things for society. Harry Belafonte once said "A funny thing happened to the world in 1985, it cared."2 In the 1980's, many benefit concerts such as Live Aid and USA for Africa were held to raise money for people who were in need of help. Other benefits such as Hands Across America and Farm Aid showed that the listeners could get involved too. Popular music reflects the outlook of the listeners of that time period. The death of friends and family members during the first world war hardened people very much and this was reflected in the lifestyle of the twenties. There was much women's suffrage during this time. People began to smoke and drink more often, and generally became more irresponsible. Jazz had much musical freedom. It represented the way many people were feeling. Not everyone was smoking and drinking too much though. Many people still continued to lead highly respectable lives. For these people were the conventional songs. The big stage musical of 1921 was 'Blossom Time' which hit song was called 'Song Of Love.' This kind of song made people happy, something that was much needed in this post- war time.3 The teenagers of the twenties, on the other hand, were said to be carefree. 'Ain't We Got Fun?' by Dick Whitings was said to be a perfect theme song for that generation.4 The young people of that time were not experiencing the same kind of grief as the slightly older people. Many things happened in the 1920's. First of all, radio was beginning to gain much power. Many things were happening in baseball. And fun- loving Ouija boards were becoming very popular. Most of the songs of the 1920's were considered proper, however there was protest over the song "If I Met The Guy Who Made This Country Dry," by Jerome- Harry ven Tilzer. There were also the conventional songs with ballads and old-fashioned waltzes. Overall, the 1920's had good songs and lyrics in popular music with much emphasis on the musical stage.6 The great depression started in the 1930's. Because of this not many people could afford to buy records. But something new emerged out of the darkness. It was the radio. People could listen all they wanted, for free. People began to stop listening to the records and depended on their trusty radio. And not only could they tune into their favorite songs, but also hear the news and other forms of entertainment. During the 1920's, at least 40 million records were sold each year. During the early 30's, about one fourth of that amount had been sold. During this time big groups of jazz musicians started to play together. It was during the swing era and was known as the Big Band era. The songs were very optimistic and could bring up the mood of the listeners, who, at this time were very depressed.7 Swing music had a very loose feeling sound. It became more popular with the popularity of the radio. Duke Ellington once said in a song "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got swing." The soloists in Duke Ellington's band were said to be "Very individualistic, playing clarinet cries, saxophone moans, and trumpet grows to his hundreds of compositions."8 One of the leaders of swing was Fletcher Henderson who organized a successful "big commercial" band. In his bands were both white and black musicians. This took away many racial tensions many people were having, by making everyone equal.9 During the thirties many people immigrated to the United States. With them they brought the music from their country. This had great influence on American music. Some immigrant composers taught music or performed in

Planning and conducting workshops Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Planning and conducting workshops - Essay Example arents with bruising that did not seem to staff to be the "usual scrapes and hurts" that children usually expose themselves too and a few of the children who used to be very happy, seem very sad. The parents explanations were suspect and some of the staff is wondering whether these children are being abused in some way. The staff is not trained in diagnosing child abuse and the CEO feels that it is important for them to understand the warning signs and what to do when they see something that looks suspicious. The CEO does not want to put the staff or the families into a panic, but they want to make sure that the children and families receive help where necessary. I first passed out questionnaires to the staff to find out the level of knowledge they had currently. I wanted to understand any myths they had about it and I needed to determine what type of training was needed to fit their needs. I also held individual and group interviews with the permission of the CEO. This allowed me to assess what each individual was hoping to learn from the training and how it would best fit into this particular environment. I gathered all this information together and it was clear that the staff needed a basic understanding of how to identify the signs of child abuse and what to do about it. All of the interviews a nd questionnaires basically came to this conclusion. I suggested to the CEO that we create a workshop that provides this information in an interactive format. We will create handouts hat explain the basic information and then use case studies created from actual situations the staff has seen that we will discuss during the workshop. The target market for this workshop is the staff and volunteers for XYZ Company. The staff and volunteers create a diverse group in ethnicity, gender and age. The target group is between ages of 27 and 65. They are primarily Caucasian and Hispanic, with a few Asian and African Americans on staff. Through the interviews I was able to get an

Developing imaging reporting by Radiology Practitioner Assistants Article
Developing imaging reporting by Radiology Practitioner Assistants - Article Example However, as with any change there was resistance to the changing developments on the role of RPAââ¬â¢s and minimal acceptance of the benefits in speeding up radiology reporting, with particular emphasis in radiology reporting in the case of accidents and emergencies that came from the increased role of RPA assistance in radiology reporting (Williams et al, 2005). The advent of imaging technology as a diagnostic aid is nearly a century old and certain practices evolved with the reporting traditions in radiology. These practices have created the requirement of a medical report. Statutes relating to the medical report to accompany radiological findings have made it essentially the domain of radiologists, negating any intrusion on the medical report by radiographers. This has led to a situation, wherein radiographers find that despite developments in their role whereby they are encouraged to point out their imaging findings, they are forced to avoid making any comments on the medical significance of their imaging findings. In short this makes their imaging findings deficit in supporting clinical decisions (Robinson, 1998). In the United States of America this practice in radiological reporting has led to a limited role in the advanced functioning of RPAs to three key areas under the supervision of a radiologist. These key areas are responsibility for the assessment of patients, patient management and education of patients; evaluation of image quality, initial image observations, and the communication of these observations to the supervising radiologist, and performing certain selected radiology procedures that include fluoroscopy. RPAs are not allowed to interpret images, make diagnosis, and prescribe medication or therapies, which remain in the realm of radiologists (The Radiologist Assistant: Improving Patient care While Providing Workforce

Research On The Importance Of Financial Planning Finance Essay
Research On The Importance Of Financial Planning Finance Essay The financial plan is an important part of both the business plan and of the entrepreneurs day-to-day management of operations. The financial planning puts the entrepreneur in touch with the realities of a financing request. This understanding will help clearly identify the amount of financing needed, the purpose for the funds, the length of time the funds are needed, and how the financing will be repaid. These issues are of key concern to the prospective financier Financial Plan The various operating plans prepared by the entrepreneur indicate where the firm is expected to go and how it will get there. The financial plan estimates and plans for the financial needed to implement these intentions. It, along with the market analysis and marketing plan, is the most critical component of the business plan. (Arthur and Stephanie, 1995) Some entrepreneurs might think of the financial plan as being strictly about the numbers, it is much more than that by providing a basis for making many decisions about the business. Decision such as how many employees to hire, what suppliers will be used, and what equipment will be purchased will be largely made while completing the financial plan. As is true with marketing and operations, one plan has to be streamlined with the other. The financial plan needs to reflect the marketing activities and the level of production that were outlined previously in the plan. (Arthur and Stephanie, 1995) Good financial planning helps a company maximize cash flow with pinpointed resource allocation and investment strategies. On the other hand, that means money can become tied up in long-term investments and investment strategies And if a companys strategic plan or financial plan ends up being woefully wrong, it may not have the money it needs to immediately rectify a problem. (Brian Boone, 2004) Its much harder to convince shareholders and stakeholders of a company how to properly execute the companys finances; its easier to get everyone behind a strategy, because its goal-oriented, not cash-oriented. But the two can be integrated. (Arthur and Stephanie, 1995) Financial plan calculation statements (shown in Appendixes) Business Plan A business plan is a document that is used to guide the new entity created by an acquisition or joint venture project. Business plans vary by project and are shaped by many considerations, but the basis of business plan is the development of the mission, goals, and objectives of the new entity consistent with the strategy, goals, and objectives of the acquiring or the parent company. The business plan includes a fairly detailed financial plan describing the timing and quantities of key financial variables with respect to revenues, expenses, capital outlays, and cash flows. However, providing performance targets and monitoring operational performance, linking management objectives and performance with operational performance, and describing a feedback and control mechanism to assess the new entity performance versus expectations and targets are value-added characteristics. The business plan is an important communication tool for delivering a consistent message concerning acquiring or parent firm expectations, goals and objectives, priorities, and operational targets of the new entity. Another useful function the business plan performs is to lay out requirements and issues that need to be addressed, coordinated, or resolved. Finally, as the environment and operating conditions change, the business plan provides the structure to evaluate the impact of changes on strengths and weaknesses of new entity. (John, 1999) A good business plan for a sound business concept can helps to achieve in business goals. It can saves the companys money and time by focusing on the business activities, and giving more control over the finances, marketing, and daily operating and helps to raise the capital of the company. (Rhonda, 2003) Bank loan Borrowed money is often the key to building and growing a successful small business. For independent business owners, however, courting lenders isnt always easy. Heres how to make a strong case and win over even the choosiest banks. By Matt Alderton. Small business owners can choose bank loan when they need to borrow money. But, if the owner having a bad credit record can be a big hindrance in terms of asking financial assistance in the future and this is a fact everyone should remember in making future loans. Messing up with the financial liabilities can land in with a bad credit record. It would be difficult to borrow money with bad record. Financial institutions like banks and even small lending organizations are strict with customers wanting to borrow money with bad record since it might be a bad investment for them. People in dire need of financial assistance with a bad credit record can just put them in the brink of bankruptcy. 5.0 Question 3.1 The companys projected sales are exceed the company objectives and the company accountant decides to advise the Board of Director later, therefore the companys financial plan may be ineffective because of the delaying release the information to the Board of Director. Aristotle :: essays papers
Aristotle According to Aristotle, a tragedy is ââ¬Å"an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its catharsis of such emotionsâ⬠(Nahm 7). Aristotle categorizes the six basic parts of any tragedy as plot, characters, thought, diction, spectacle and melody. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet follow this definition of a tragedy and adhere to Aristotleââ¬â¢s six elements of a tragedy: plot, character, diction, thought, spectacle, and song. The Plot, the first principle, refers to the combination of incidents in the story. Aristotle thinks this to be the most important feature of the tragedy. William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet contain a plot that complies with the first line of Aristotleââ¬â¢s definition o f a tragedy, which states ââ¬Å"the imitation of an action is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itselfâ⬠(Nahm 7). This refers to the first element of a tragedy, the plot, implying that Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet deal with one issue that is very serious in magnitude such as the conflict between the two families which lead to innocent deaths. Shakespeare also follows Aristotleââ¬â¢s idea of the tragedy being of a certain magnitude. This is because the characters are realistic therefore the audience is capable of relating to them easily. Romeo and Juliet are upset, while grieving over their impending separation and angered about the circumstances surrounding their families. They are also unsure of themselves how they should handle the situation. The audience can relate to this uncertain feeling and they are able to empathize with Romeo and Juliet. Aristotle believed the plot should depict the fall of a man who is basically good, but who suffers from some error or frailty. In the play, Romeoââ¬â¢s frailty is his apt to fall in love too quickly and deeply. In the start of the play he is in love with Lady Rosalynn, but soon falls for Juliet, a member of the Capulets, a rival family. Romeo is blinded by love, unable to think with rational, which cause a string of negative events to come to pass. The suffering of the tragic hero also extends beyond himself.

Breach Of Contract Essay
Breach of contract simply means non performance without excuse or intrusion with other partyââ¬â¢s performance with regards with bargained-for exchange or agreement made by one or more parties concerned. The claimant or the complainant in cases of breach of contract is said to be a plaintiff. It refers to a party seeking for a legal remedy by initiating a charge on the court. He also seeks judgment favorable to him and appropriate from legal basis. Not every single case of breaches of contract will be automatically agreement killers or will end up in incriminate. There is what we call material and immaterial breaches. The lawsuit depends on whether it is material or immaterial and also depends on who the parties are. Immaterial breaches are simple cases which can be ignored. It can be fixed by giving opportunity for the defendant to correct and fix the breach. One case of breach of contract is the 2006 case charge against Howard Stern, American radio personality by CBS radio. The CBA radio takes legal action against their former star due to inappropriate used of radio airtime just to build up his potential employer, the Sirius Satellite Radio. And also he was charged due to gained financial reward thru the help of stock sale of CBS radio(Carter, 2006). With this case, the breach is said to be done because the allegedly defendant is of makings things out of his responsibilities and out of the agreement made. As a defense, he can simply use the issue of personal vendetta. He may say that they only using the charges just to annihilate his image as a radio star. If the breach will end up in victory for the Plaintiff, the CBS, they could attain financial payments for the said breach. Reflection Knowing the ideas on breach of contract is necessary for any business related individual as to know what to do to avoid things concerning breach of contract. Because breach of contract may happen in many ways, it is necessary for me as a business practitioner to be able to know much about this. We should know that breach of contract may happen in following cases, one is when a corporation ordered a product from me as an example and when time of delivery it will not accept it or even accept it but they wonââ¬â¢t pay for it, I can charge them breach. Second is when corporation tries to interfere with my business which is also another case. Third is when a one of my former employee opens his own business and when gives criticisms against his my business we can also say that it is a breach. For us as a business entrepreneur, knowing the laws in a business community is an essential part especially if we are only a newcomer to the world of business. Being new does not mean we should always be ignorant of the things we should be most likely aware of. There exist a lot of things that should be known and understood with regards with our business. The topic in breach of contract is one of the noted laws in a business community that seems to have a lot of cases. By giving attention to the topic we could further think of ways how to avoid or if not meant to do so we can find ways to solve it. To be able to attain success, not just know how to make our business work out, we should always consider what the things that should be done and the things not should be done. Preparing for a business seems to be tedious but knowing the game of business can help much in business progress. References: Carter, B. (2006).
